Coming Soon! The Essential Geography of the Okanagan Valley!

Sunlit, dry, and shaped by water, the Okanagan Valley is one of British Columbia's most distinctive landscapes. This wall map traces its geography from end to end: the long chain of lakes at its heart, the vineyard-draped benches above them, the rugged bluffs and rolling plateau country that frame the valley on either side, and the rare pocket of semi-arid desert found nowhere else in Canada. It's built on detailed shaded relief and drawn from official topographic and geographic data, reflecting also the enduring presence of the Syilx / Okanagan people, whose knowledge and history run through these lakes, rivers, and grasslands.

A Beautiful Map That Reveals the True Geography of the Okanagan Valley

The Okanagan Valley is one of British Columbia's most distinctive interior landscapes. A long chain of lakes runs the length of the valley floor, flanked by vineyard-draped benches, arid bluffs, and rolling plateau uplands. To the south lies a rare pocket of semi-arid desert found nowhere else in Canada. This map was designed to make that variety and contrast legible at a glance.

The Essential Geography of the Okanagan Valley presents the region as a coherent physical landscape, emphasizing terrain, watershed, and lake system rather than political boundaries or visual clutter. It is a reference map intended to be read, studied, and returned to over time.

What This Map Shows

The map highlights the Okanagan's defining physiographic features, including the Thompson Plateau to the west, the Okanagan Highland to the east, and the long lake system that anchors the valley between them. Rivers, streams, and the valley's chain of lakes are rendered clearly, allowing the relationship between water and terrain to emerge naturally.

Elevation and landform are central to the design. Detailed shaded relief gives the valley depth without overpowering labels or fine detail, making it easy to understand how plateau, highland, and valley floor connect across the landscape.

Cartographic Design and Approach

This map was created using a restrained, information-first cartographic approach inspired by classic reference atlases and modern Swiss design principles. Every design decision, from colour palette to label hierarchy, was made to support clarity and readability.

Rather than presenting every possible feature, the map focuses on what matters most for understanding the valley's geography. Towns, roads, and parks are included selectively, while terrain, hydrography, and watershed structure form the visual foundation. The result is a map that communicates clearly at a distance but rewards closer inspection.

Print Quality and Physical Details

The map is printed on premium 260 gsm photographic paper with a low-lustre finish that minimizes glare while preserving fine detail. High-resolution commercial inkjet printing ensures crisp linework, smooth tonal transitions, and accurate colour reproduction.

Each map is shipped rolled in a protective tube. This is a wall map designed for framing and long-term display, not a folded travel map.

Who This Map Is For

This map is ideal for anyone interested in the Okanagan Valley's unique geography. Maybe you have a summer home in the Okanagan - this would look great on the wall! It works equally well as an educational reference, a planning tool, or a statement piece for homes, offices, and studios.
